What is the age range? |
Lions will welcome you whatever your age. In the Solihull Lions Club we have an
age range from the 30's to the 80's but would admit to being an aging group,
which is why we would particularly welcome younger Lions. |
|
Do I have to live in Solihull? |
No. In fact we already have Lions living in Birmingham, Knowle, Kings Coughton,
Shirley and Shrewley as well as central Solihull itself. |
|
Is it all meetings? |
No - like most Clubs Solihull meets
formally once a month at 7.45pm on the third Tuesday of the month at the Ramada
Jarvis Hotel. Also each Lion serves on one of three committees
(Administration, Fund Raising and Community Services) and these normally
meet monthly as well, at the Remada Hotel or at a members house and to suit members diaries. After
that its lots of fun, particularly at fund raising events, and at the
regular social occasions arranged for Lions and their partners/family and
friends. |
|
Is it a Charity? |
Yes we are registered with the Charities Commission (Reg. No. 514742), and we
keep our fund raising strictly separate from our membership & administration
costs, which we pay for through subscriptions. |
|
Is it expensive? |
Our annual fee is only £74 so the answer has got to be 'no'. Obviously
there are the costs of social events but these are not obligatory so that you
don't have to spend a fortune to be a Lion. |
|
Do I have to be a professional
or business person to join Lions? |
No, the Lions welcome everyone from all backgrounds
and walks of life whether you are working, between jobs or retired,
providing you share in their objectives - to serve the local community. |
|
I've heard the Lions is not just in the UK? |
Lions started in Chicago in 1917 and came to the UK in the early 1950s. Lions is
the world's largest and most active service organisation, with 1.3 million men &
women world-wide; 19,000 Lions in Britain and Ireland 900 of them in 65 Clubs in
the Midlands. |
|
How many people are there in a Lions Club? |
Usually between 20 & 30, although Clubs do vary. Solihull currently has
21
members, but with
some Lions moving on every year it is essential to replace them. We actively
seek new members. |
|
What about my family? |
The Solihull Club particularly welcomes
ladies as Lions although at present we have only two full lady members. However,
like many others we work on the principle that partners and family may
support all fund raising activities and socials. You and all your family
will be welcome to our Lions community in Solihull. |
|
Is Lions just fund raising? |
Certainly not. Most Clubs,
including ours, have a variety of community service activities e.g.
supporting youth, the elderly, those with disabilities, and health. Did you know
Lions International raised $135m with the intention of eradicating preventable
blindness throughout the world? |
|
How much time will I
have to commit to Lions? |
The commitment is only what you choose to make it. We find, as with most things
in life, the more you can put in, the more you will get out. |
|
How can I find out whether I would enjoy Lions? |
Contact us at
enquiries@solihulllionsclub.org.uk or phone Doug
Cross on 01564770755
and we will tell
you more about Solihull Lions, answer any further questions you may have, and invite
